Starting on July 15, Bangladesh started to suffer worst ever flood in
its history, breaking the record of 1988. Two third of the country went under
water. All 64 districts have been affected more or less, Sunamganj and Habigang being the
100% inundated.
To help the distressed people, the government, NGOs,
different institutions and individuals have taken various steps. As among the
six divisions Sylhet is the unlucky one to contain the worst affected Sunamganj
and Habiganj district, the SUST family was quick to respond to the calamity of
the people.
The university authority formed an Executive
Committee to conduct and a Steering Committee to monitor the aid program. The
Executive Committee has opened a bank account to receive generous monetary help.
Donation is highly needed and appreciated to help the people in need.
The Committee has collected some funds from the
employee of SUST and benevolent individuals from home and abroad, and
distributed meals to the people in immediate need. Later, about 57,000 packets of oral saline and
15,000 packets of water purifier kit have been distributed. Current projects include distributing stationery
sets and vegetable seeds among the flood affected school children.
