Industrialization has become essential for economic growth and employment generation in Bangladesh. But the speeding up of the process of industrialization without adequate waste management facilities has become the cause of degradation of environment and quality of life. This has generated concerns among the policy makers and the general people who are beginning to show their discontent with the state of environment of the rivers, canals, lakes, and wetlands around the industries. Health and wellbeing of the people around industries and users of contaminated water are at great risk. The growing concerns have finally led to the adoption of a regulatory environment where industries are classified under the law and the polluting industries being pushed by the Department of Environment to adopt measures to reduce emission, reuse wasted energy/resources and recycle/treat the effluents.

Indiscriminate disposal of polluting wastes beyond assimilation capacity of the water bodies has become the cause of deterioration of water quality and aquatic ecosystem. The Buriganga, the Lakhya, the Turag, the Surma, the Pasur, the Karnafuli and the Balu rivers have become highly contaminated around the industrial clusters. The government has taken a decision to strictly enforce the Environmental Conservation Act (1995) and Environmental Conservation Rule (1997), which will require all the polluting industries to install effluent treatment plants.

Most of the industries in Bangladesh are in the process of purchasing Effluent Treatment Plants (ETPs) from the international markets without being able to verify their real efficiency in treating such wastes. Many of the large, medium and small polluting industrial units, however, have not been able to erect and operate effluent treatment plants because of technical, financial and management constraints. The compliance costs are high because of high cost and lack of appropriate technologies, technical and managerial skills for pollution prevention and control. There is a need for finding a cost effective and sustainable solution to environmental problems caused by polluting industries. In this context, an International Conference and Exhibition on Industrial Wastewater Treatment can help to understand the latest development in ETPs as well as the effectiveness, limitations of different systems.
