Biography
Dr Mohammad Morad is a Professor of Sociology and the Director
of the Writing Centre at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST),
Sylhet, Bangladesh. He holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Padova,
Italy, under the doctoral programme Social Sciences: Interactions,
Communication, and Cultural Constructions, which included a visiting
research period at the University of Leeds, United Kingdom, supported by an
Italian doctoral scholarship. His doctoral dissertation, Multiple
Migrations: Social Networks and Transnational Lives of Italian Bangladeshis in
Europe, is grounded in multi-sited qualitative research conducted in Italy
and the United Kingdom. This study contributes to migration scholarship by
examining the step-by-step migration trajectories of naturalised EU citizens
and offering a nuanced analysis of the role of social networks and
transnational ties in shaping multiple migratory movements across Europe.
Dr Morad is also a recipient of the prestigious Erasmus Mundus
Scholarship (Category A), through which he earned a second Master’s degree in
Migration and Intercultural Relations (EMMIR). This transdisciplinary programme
was undertaken at the University of Oldenburg (Germany), the University of
Stavanger (Norway), and the University of Nova Gorica (Slovenia). His MA
thesis, Formation of Diaspora through Diasporic and Transnational
Linkages: The Case of Bangladeshi Migrants in Italy, explores the formation
of the Bangladeshi diaspora by analysing key dimensions, including dispersion,
homeland connection, and the preservation of ethnic identity in the host
society.
His research interests include international migration, migrant
labour, social networks, transnationalism, diaspora formation, refugee
mobility, and intra-EU migration. He has conducted extensive fieldwork in
Italy, Germany, Slovenia, the United Kingdom, and Bangladesh. His
scholarly work has been published in leading peer-reviewed international
journals, including The British Journal of Sociology (Q1 in
Sociology), International Sociology (Q1 in Sociology), International
Migration (Q1 in Demography), Ethnic and Racial Studies (Q1
in Sociology), Population, Space and Place (Q1 in
Demography), Labor History (Q1 in History), and Two
Homelands (Q1 in Cultural Studies). He is a member of the editorial
team of the South-South Migration Book Series, Springer Nature. He is currently
the principal investigator of the research project “Displacement and
Life in Limbo: Exploring the Sense of Identity and Belonging of Rohingya Youth” (Project
ID: SS/2025/1/64).
In September 2022, Dr Morad was awarded a travel grant to serve
as a Visiting Faculty at the University of Oldenburg (Germany), where he
delivered several lectures on international migration for the Erasmus Mundus
students enrolled in the European MA in Migration and Intercultural Relations.
In October 2022, he received the University of Padova’s ‘Shaping World Class
University Fellowship’ and served as a Visiting Professor in the Research Group
of Sociology of Work. During the visit, he contributed to the development of a
joint research project within the Sociology of Work research group and
delivered seminars to PhD students in the ‘Social Science: Interactions,
Communication and Cultural Construction’ programme and to Master’s students in
the ‘Cultural Pluralism, Social Change, and Migration’ programme.
Beyond academia, he has held research and management positions
with several national and international NGOs, including CARE Bangladesh and
Caritas Bangladesh. These roles provided him with substantial hands-on
experience and enabled him to contribute directly to development initiatives
focused on empowerment, gender equality, food security and livelihoods
improvements for marginalised communities in rural Bangladesh. In addition, he
has demonstrated academic leadership at Shahjalal University of Science and
Technology, serving as the elected Joint Secretary of the Teachers' Association
and as an elected member of the Syndicate, the university’s highest governing
body.
