    Message From Head

    Professor Dr. Mohammed Taj Uddin

    Head of the Department

Welcome to the Department of Statistics! On behalf of the department, I invite you to take some moment to visit this website.
First of all, I express my heartfelt thanks to our faculty, staff, and students for their sincere cooperation in adapting to the new way of academic life forced on us by the Covid-19 pandemic. Like the entire SUST campus, we in the Department of Statistics also tried to ensure our students to receive the best possible education they all deserve.
The Department of Statistics at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology has started its academic journey in 1991. The department possesses a dynamic research environment and offers a full range of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees (MS, M.Phil, and Ph.D) in statistics. We familiarize students with the probabilistic and statistical ideas and methods and their role in many fields of science, technology, business, economics and social science. We provide instruction in the theory and commonly useful applications of techniques and offer advanced training through workshops and graduate programs.
With the rapid progressing technology, it is the era / time of data and information. The department envisages creating graduates with advanced theoretical and practical skills to face the challenge of handling ‘big data’ of modern time. One of the important missions of the department is to promote research activities in the pursuit of discovering new horizons in various areas; sustain the development efforts of the university in the delivery of professional academic services and other development-oriented programs; and strengthen local and international linkages through mutual partnership and cooperation.
The department has an excellent track record in both teaching and research. We offer flexible educational pathways, emphasizing the theoretical, practical, and computational aspects of statistics. The research areas of the faculty members cover wide range of applied and theoretical aspect in various fields including data mining, population studies, statistical inferences, biostatistics, econometrics, time series analysis, actuarial science/statistics, multivariate analysis, operations research and more. The research expertise of the faculty member is reflected in the quality of postgraduate teaching and research supervision, as well as in the wide range of topics offered to students for postgraduate research. The qualifications, admission process and academic regulation for graduate studies including M.Phil and Ph.D are available at the university web.
This department has signed MOU with Assam University, Cachar, India and Universiti Utara Malaysia, 06010 Sintok, Kedah Darul Aman, Malaysia regarding academic exchanges. Some other foreign universities are also contacted for such activities.
The department is facilitated with various research and technical support. Computer is the most important resource for statisticians. We have two computer laboratories with sufficient computer and technical support as well as online connection with every computer. An extensive collection of statistical software is also available. Students get every kind of support from these labs. The seminar library of the department has a good collection of statistical text books and national & international journals. The staff of the seminar library is always willing to provide solution to general inquires and other assistance.
If you need further information or have any suggestions about how we can better serve the campus and off-campus communities, please do not hesitate to email me.
All in all, the last academic year was a satisfying year and I look forward to continual excellence by our faculty and students.
